Catching Fire - Chapter 17 Summary

·      The Gamemakers are all appalled by what Katniss made. Plutarch tells Katniss she can leave. As she goes, she sprays more berry juice across the room.

·      At dinner she sits with Haymitch, Peeta and other team members, and they talk about the day they’re just had. Peeta says he took some of the camouflage paint and painted a picture of dead Rue on the ground. The others are very concerned about this, but Katniss thinks it was a very brave thing to do. Katniss then says what she did, which makes Effie leave the room. Katniss and Peeta then say they want to go into the arena with no allies.

·      Cinna tells them to go and find out their scores from their one on one meeting with the Gamemakers. The Gamemakers both gave and Peeta and Katniss a 12, which is the highest score you can get. No one has ever got this score before. Haymitch says they are in a lot of danger, as people will see them, as the greatest threat so will want to kill them quicker in the arena.

·      Peeta and Katniss share a bed again, and apologize to each other for disagreeing. Katniss and Peeta then have a day off, but after that it all starts again. Katniss’ Prep Team are very emotional, ad Octavia and Flavius have to excuse themselves. Cinna then comes in and puts Katniss in the wedding dress the public chose for her; Snow had specifically requested that she wore this dress to the last event before the games, even though the wedding wasn’t going to take place.

·      Katniss notices that the dress feels different to how it did before. Cinna tells her that at the right time during her interview, she must put her hands in the air and turn around. Cinna says he will tell her when to do this. The two of them then head off to the interviews.

·      The Tributes are interviewed in accordance with their district number, and many of the tributes make slight subtle digs at the Capitol. When it is Katniss’ turn the audience is very emotional by the sight of Katniss in her wedding dress. She then starts to move how Cinna told her to, and her dress catches fire and burns off. In the place of the white wedding dress, is a black costume, which makes her look like a Mockingjay.
