Catching Fire - Chapter 20 Summary

·      Katniss thinks that Peeta is dead as a result of the accident. However, Finnick steps in and saves Peter life by giving him CPR. Katniss decides that she has to be allies with Finnick now as he saved Peter’s life, which is what she is ultimately trying to do in the arena.

·      When they start to move again, Katniss tells them she knew about the Force Field, but doesn’t say that she knows all force fields have a weak spot, as she doesn’t want the Gamemakers to know the full range of her knowledge. She therefore says she can hear the field, rather than being able to see it.

·      They continue looking for water. Katniss decides to climb a tree to see where they are; while doing so, she realises that the arena is shaped like a giant circle, with a dome encasing them in the arena.

·      After looking for water for the rest of the day, there is still no sign of it. Mags and Peeta are very worn out, so they decide to stop for the night. When they start to rest, the canon goes off 8 times, signalling that 8 people have died on the first day.

·      Katniss starts to hunt, and finds some small rat like creatures. She notices that it has just been drinking, but can’t work out where the water is from.

·      Katniss and her team are keen to eat, but can’t work out how to cook the animal. Peeta decides to throw a small bit of meat into the force field, and it bounces back slightly blackened but perfectly cooked inside. They eat the meat, and some nuts that Mags has collected.

·      When night comes, the faces of the dead tributes are projected into the sky. The most deadly tributes are still alive.

·      After the announcement, a little parachute comes down into their camp with a gift from outside the games. It’s a little pipe, but they can’t work out what to do with it.

·      Katniss starts to think about home, and realises that she is very homesick. But while she is thinking about home, she realises what the gift is – it is used to draw water out of trees.

·      They place the pipe in a tree, and are able to finally drink some water.

·      Finnick keeps watch for the first half of the night, while the others sleep. During the middle of the night, Katniss and Finnick hear a bell chiming 12 times, but they can’t figure out what it means.

·      Finnick then passes the duty of watch onto Katniss, and while she is guarding their camp it starts to rain. Katniss then hears a canon shot, meaning that somebody else has died.
