Peeta tries to console Katniss. It doesn’t do
much good but Katniss starts to focus on the Games, and work out how she will
make it so Peeta survives the Games.

After having dinner with Peeta, Effie and
Haymitch they find out who else has been picked from the other districts.
Katniss has terrible nightmares and wakes up; she finds Peeta watching reruns of
old games. They then watch Haymitch’s games. Haymitch took part in the last
Quarter Quell, where there were twice as many tributes as usual. The tape shows
the whole process of the games, and shows how at the reaping, Katniss’ mother’s
friend, Maysille was picked. Maysille was the aunt of Katniss’ friend, Madge, meaning
that Katniss’ Mockingjay pin belonged to Maysille. Haymith’s arena is beautiful
but lethal and he manages to get supplies straight away, and the fighting
begins. Lots of tributes are killed off very quickly. Maysille and Haymitch
become allies temporarily, but she then soon ends the alliance. Haymitch realises
that the arenas never ends but has a force field around it. Maysille dies and
then it’s just Haymitch and one other. The other girl is attacking Haymitch but
then throws her weapon at Haymitch; it disappears in the force field and
rebounds on to her. Haymitch wins.

Katniss realises that Haymitch is like her, in
that they both outsmarted the Capitol and were able to be victorious in the Hunger
Games as a result. She realises that to save Peter she will have to work with
him.
