Catching Fire - Chapter 27 Summary

·      There are big explosions within the arena, not just the ones Katniss made but other ones too.

·      While the explosions are taking place, a hovercraft comes and takes Katniss. Inside the hovercraft is Plutarch.

·      Katniss becomes unconscious.

·      When she awakes she is surrounded by medical equipment, she tries to break free but she blacks out.

·      She wakes again and notices that Beetee is next to her and they are both restrained. She thinks they are both still alive to be punished more. She then blacks out again.

·      She then wakes again and is no longer restrained. Beetee is still next to her but she doesn’t know where the other tributes are. She decides that if Peeta is still alive she will kill him before they are all punished.

·      She walks around looking for Peeta and overhears a conversation between Plutarch, Finnick and Haymitch.

·      Katniss enters and they try to calm her down, while calming Finnick down as well.

·      Haymitch tells her that the whole Games had been planned, and that Katniss is not being punished but was rescued from the Games. She is told that some of the tributes knew about the plan and were working on the plan in the arena. She is also told that the bread they received was code for when Plutarch was going to come and rescue them.

·      Katniss is then told that they are going to District 13, and that it does exist. As Bonnie and Twill told her.

·      Plutarch tells her that he was trying to tell her about the arena when he showed her the watch at the party.

·      Katniss is told that the other tributes were always trying to protect her, as she has become the symbol of a revolution in the districts. They then tell Katniss that they were unable to rescue Peeta, or Johanna.

·      Katniss then jumps towards Haymitch and scratches his face so hard it starts to bleed. She is then drugged and is knocked out.

·      When Katniss awakes, Finnick is there and tries to explain what is happening.

·      Katniss is very depressed about what has happened but then Gale comes to visit her. Gale tells, her that District 12 was bombed by the capitol and no longer exists, and that her family survived but that her home didn’t and that there is no district 12.

Catching Fire - Chapter 26 Summary

·      It’s night-time in the arena, but tonight there are no canon shots meaning that nobody died today.

·      Beetee and Finnick start wrapping the wire around the tree. Beetee then says the group has to split, Johanna and Katniss have to run to the beach with the wire and then run away, while Finnick, Peeta and Beetee will stay together. Peeta and Katniss want to stay together but they are unable to.

·      Katniss and Johanna then realise that their wire has been cut.

·      Katniss then gets knocked out after being hit on the head. Katniss comes to and feels Johanna cutting into her arm, and Johanna pushing Katniss away, and running away.

·      Katniss is confused about whom to trust now, and decides she needs to go and try and save Peeta.

·      Katniss is very badly injured but keeps looking for Peeta, as she knows she can totally trust him.

·      Finnick is also looking for Katniss, but Katniss hides so he can’t find her.

·      Katniss then hears the canon shooting telling them that someone else has died.

·      Katniss gets stuck in Beetee’s wire but manages to free herself. She gets back to the tree but only Beetee is there. He is very badly wounded and knocked out. He is lying very close to the force field with more wire, which makes Katniss think he had his own plan, which he didn’t tell the others.

·      Peeta shouts out to Katniss and she replies.

·      Katniss can see Finnick and Enobaria coming. Then, Katniss hears another canon, telling her that another tribute has died.

·      Katniss realises that there are very few left in the arena, so that if she was to give up her life,

·      Peeta could still be able to win.

·      Katniss then remembers how just before she entered the arena Haymitch told her to remember who the real enemy is.

·      Katniss remembers who the real enemy is, and realises that she has to finish what Beetee was attempting to do.

·      Katniss takes one of her arrows, and shoots it into the Dome’s force field; she shoots into its weak spot which she had learned about in her training.

·      Katniss hits the force field and the arena explodes.

Catching Fire - Chapter 25 Summary

·      Katniss and her group awake and get 24 more bread rolls as a gift from sponsors.

·      Katniss starts to worry about what will happen to their group, as she knows their alliance can’t last forever. Only one can be the victor of theses Hunger Games. And Katniss wants Peeta to be the victor.

·      Katniss takes Peeta aside to talk to him. She tells him she thinks they should separate from their allies, but Peeta says they should stay with the group a little longer. Katniss decides to agree Peeta for the moment.

·      The allies then regroup and Beetee says they need to kill their opponents, who are not part of their alliance before they get killed themselves.

·      The group think that the other group must be close by.

·      Beetee suggests that they use his wire to create a trap, which when the lighting at 12 o’clock hits it will electrocute most of the arena. Everyone who is near the wire die straight away. Beetee says that their group will have to be far away so they don’t die as well.

·      The group are unconvinced but Beetee convinces them and they start to make the trap. They attach the wire to the tree, where the lightning always hits.

·      Katniss warns them about the force field, and where they will need to go to be safe from it. Beetee tests the force field, but no one understands what he is doing.

·      While Beetee makes the final adjustments to his trap, the others catch a lot of seafood, as the lightning shock will probably kill the whole fish supply. Peeta finds an oyster with a pearl in it, and gives the pearl to Katniss.

·      After Peeta gives her the pearl, he realises that Katniss is still going to save him over herself, and they are both very sad.

·      The group gets another 24 more rolls from sponsors.

Catching Fire - Chapter 24 Summary

·      Katniss runs into the forest, desperate to find her sister. Finally Katniss spots a Jabberjay and understands that the bird is making the noise and that it is just another part of the Games. Katniss shoots the bird anyway though.

·      Katniss starts to explain what is happening to Finnick, when another bird starts using a voice he knows. Katniss shoots the bird and explains to him what happens.

·      Finnick points out that since Jabberjays imitate noises, their loved ones were probably tortured to make the noises, which they both find very upsetting. A Jabberjay then starts which uses Gale’s voice. Finnick forces Katniss back to their camp area.

·      When they get back to the camp, they realise that they are hidden behind a see through wall and can’t escape the birds until the hour is over.

·      The birds start flying towards them and Katniss kills as many as she can but more and more keep coming.

·      After the hour is over, the wall disappears and the others can rescue them. Peeta tries to calm Katniss and Finnick down by telling them the Jabberjays are fake and the voices are created by Gamemakers. Beetee confirms Peeta’s idea that it is not hard to create voices.

·      Johanna goes to collect water, and says she isn’t afraid of the birds because there is no one she loves or cares about.

·      The group try to work out where they are in the clock.

·      It then turns to night and the group find out that another 8 tributes have died, meaning that only 3 more tributes are left outside of their little group.

·      Peeta and Katniss enjoy time alone. Peeta tells her that Finnick probably heard the voice of Annie, who was meant to come into these Quarter Quell games, but Mags volunteered instead. He says Annie went crazy during her games, and Finnick is in love with her.

·      The group then receive a present from District 3, which is 24 bread rolls.

·      Peeta and Katniss talk while the others sleep on the beach. They find out that Haymitch had promised both of them that he would keep the other one alive. They disagree over who should survive, but then Peeta shows Katniss a picture of her family and says she has a reason to stay alive.

·      They then try to ignore the cameras and be honest with each other. Peeta and Katniss then kiss passionately.

·      They then hear lightning in the distance, meaning that the clock has started again. Finnick takes over the night watch from Katniss, so that she is able to sleep.

·      Peeta kisses Katniss goodnight, and references their baby, which makes them both know they are playing for the cameras again.

Catching Fire - Chapter 23 Summary

·      Katniss realises that the arena is designed like a clock, with each section deadly for an hour at a time. Katniss tells the others what she has worked out, and they decide that they can’t stay in one place and they decide to move on.

·      Katniss remembers that Plutarch showed her his watch with the Mockingjay symbol on it, and she wonders if he was trying to explain something to her.

·      They start to go, but Beetee will not go without his wire, which is the weapon he chose and the object, which Katniss couldn’t figure out what it was. Johanna tells the group how Beetee risked his life to get the wire at the Cornucopia.

·      Finnick suggests that they go back to where they first entered the arena. They get to the beach, and Wiress washes Beetee’s wire in the sea.

·      Wiress starts singing, which the others find strange. But Beetee explains that she only stops singing when things suddenly change, and that she is like the birds the miners take down into the mines.

·      Johanna finds an axe, which is her favourite weapon, and Peeta starts trying to draw a map of the clock so they know where the danger is going to come from next.

·      Suddenly, Wiress stops singing, but the group is too late, and another bunch of tributes have already killed her. Johanna and Katniss kill two of the attackers, while the other two escape.

·      Then an earthquake movement starts happening and everyone is thrown to the ground. When it stops, Beetee is missing and Wiress has been swept out to sea.

·      Finnick sees that Beetee is in the sea and goes to save him. Katniss then realises that Beetee’s wire is in Wiress’ hand, so she swims out into the sea to go and get it.

·      The group decide to move on and want to go to where the clock starts, but because of the earthquake they don’t know where that is. They don’t know what to do, so they re-enter the forested area.

·      Finnick and Katniss go and collect water, while Johanna and Peeta start making another drawing of the clock.

·      Katniss is confused, as everyone seems to be trying to help Peeta. She finds this strange because of the nature of the Games, where everyone is for himself or herself.

·      Katniss and Finnick are collecting water; when they suddenly hear the sound of Katniss’ sister, Prim being tortured.

Catching Fire - Chapter 22 Summary

·      Peeta attacks the monkey who attacked the morphling addict, and the other monkeys disappear.

·      Peeta stays with the addict who is dying, and talks about colours and paintings he has done. This comforts the dying lady and eases her pain. The tribute uses her blood from her wounds to paint a flower on Peeta’s cheek, and then she dies.

·      Katniss bathes in the sea, as the poisonous gas has left them with scabs.

·      Finnick is upset over the death of Mags and says he will stand guard so Katniss and Peeta can rest.

·      When they wake, Finnick has collected fish for their breakfast. Katniss is suffering from her scabs, which are very itchy and scratchy. She starts wishing for a balm to heal them, when a little parachute comes down with a green salve in it. Katniss rubs the balm on Finnick and herself, and they go and wake Peeta up, whilst still covered in the green stuff.

·      Peeta is scared by the way they look but they are all grateful for a little joke.

·      Another gift arrives for the group, this times it’s bread.

·      They start to think about what to do next. Katniss doesn’t want to go back into the forest, but she doesn’t know where they should go.

·      In the distance, they see a giant wave crashing into the Cornucopia. They then hear the canon, telling them that another tribute has died.

·      Suddenly, there are 3 more tributes on the beach with them. Finnick, Peeta and Katniss run away and try to hide.

·      The 3 new tributes, which have just arrived on the beach, are all red, and one of them is leading the other two.

·      Finnick is excited to find out that one of them is Johanna, as Johanna and Finnick have an alliance, which neither Peeta nor Katniss knew about.

·      Johanna is with Beetee and Wiress, which Katniss and Peeta find very strange.

·      The two groups merge together to form a big group. Wiress keeps repeating the words ‘tick tock’ over and over, but no one understands what she is saying.

·      Johanna and Katniss start to argue, and Finnick throws Johanna into the water to cool her down.

Catching Fire - Chapter 21 Summary

·      Katniss wakes everyone and shouts that they need to move quickly.

·      Finnick takes Mags and runs, and Katniss is left to pull Peeta along. She thinks that it might be best to go on without him, as he is still feeling the effects of the earlier accident in the force field. But she quickly decides she cannot do this.

·      Katniss and Peeta are struggling in the fog, and the fog is burning them. Peeta starts to slow down even more, as a result of the poisonous fog. Finnick returns to take Peeta, while Katniss helps Mags.

·      Katniss has been badly affected by the gas, and no longer has the strength to carry Mags. Mags sees that Finnick needs to take Peeta, so runs into the gas and sacrifices herself for the other three.

·      The three others can’t save her, so continue as far as they can before collapsing, as the fog has stopped following them.

·      As they head to the water, where the games first started, they see monkeys nearby. They jump into the water, and it is very painful for them but the burns on their bodies slowly start to feel better.

·      Finnick collapses and Peeta and Katniss pick him up and slowly take him to the water and bathe him, to try and heal him.

·      Katniss and Finnick lie in the water, while Peeta goes and taps a tree for more water. Katniss starts to wonder why Finnick and Mags are doing so much to protect them.

·      Suddenly dangerous looking monkeys surround Katniss and Finnick.

·      Katniss signals to Peeta to come back without disturbing the monkeys. He nearly makes it but then the monkeys start to attack them. Katniss realises that these creatures are mutations made by the Gamemakers.

·      A monkey attacks Peeta, and before Katniss can get there to help him, another tribute, jumps in front of Peeta, and is horribly bitten by it, but saves Peeta’s life. The tribute who saved him was a morphling addict, which means they had an addiction to the medicine.
